About Mary
Mary Finlayson composes music in Woodside, California, where she lives with her husband Norris. They are parents of seven children, numerous grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
Mary never thought of making a website like this. The project was undertaken by her friends who value Mary’s music and wish for it to be more widely available. However, the website appears with Mary’s permission, and with her full cooperation.
Composing isn’t the only thing Mary does. She’s a multi-faceted woman enriching many pools of people and interests. But music has always been a part of her life, since she was a small child growing up in Berkeley, California. She studied piano, flute and harp and began arranging music while in high school. Mary also sang in the Oakland Symphony Chorus and Chamber Choir, and later with the Boston Chorus Pro Musica.
Mary is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormon Church), and has spent a lifetime singing in choirs and ensembles tied to her local congregation. The crucial need of fresh literature for groups like these has been her primary motivation to compose, and she is committed to writing in a way that is fully accessible to a wide range of performers.
